Whereas success in information-based courses like history and biology depends on the level of recall of a large amount of information, success in mathematics instead depends on mastery of a few key skills. Even the most dedicated students struggle when they try to learn math by memorizing large amounts of information rather than developing these key skills. Instead of applying these universal concepts and principles to diverse situations, they are forced to memorize a separate system for each situation, and rote memorization replaces true understanding.
The Fundamentals of Math courses work exclusively on developing the key skills that allow students to excel in math courses. The Fundamentals of Algebra course focuses on algebraic manipulation, sums and products of rational expressions, higher order equations, systems of equations, graphing, and other foundational areas. The Fundamentals of Calculus class focuses on explicit and implicit derivatives, the chain rule, integration, differential equations, volumes, and other fundamentals. As core skills develop, students learn to apply them to different situations, strengthening their understanding and developing their abstract mathematical reasoning.
The Fundamentals of Math courses are appropriate as companion courses to school classes, or as standalone classes for unusually gifted students.
Enrollment is limited to eleven students.
